  • Chief of State: President Milan KUCAN
  • Head of Government: Prime Minister Janez DRNOVSEK
  • Assembly: Slovenia has a unicameral parliament which consists of the National Assembly (Drzavni Zbor) with 90 members.
Description of electoral structure:
  • The president is popularly elected to serve a five-year term.
  • In the National Assembly (Drzavni Zbor), 40 members are directly elected while the remaining 50 members are chosen by proportional vote. All members of the National Assembly serve a four-year term.

  • The last presidential election in Slovenia was on November 24, 1997. KUCAN received 56% of the vote.
Population and number of registered voters:
  • Population: 1,930,132 (July 2001 est.)
  • Number of registered voters: 1587,430 (Based on the 2000 elections).
Of Interest:
  • President KUCAN cannot run for the presidency because he has served the maximum two terms under the constitution.
  • Because none of the candidates received a majority vote, a second run-off election will be held on December 1st between DRNOVŠEK and BREZIGAR.
