The fashion uproars of 2011

From mothers trying to dress like teens to sexy toddler outfits, the year in fashion had its share of uproars and mixed messages. "Femiman" model Andrej Pejic was featured prominently in designer Jean-Paul Gaultier's fashion shows, wearing men and women's clothing. "Gaultier using a man to model women's clothes this year confirmed what I think a lot of curvy women feel about high fashion: That the person those clothes are really made for is a teenage boy," said Ada Calhoun, who is working with Tim Gunn on his "Tim Gunn's Fashion Bible" book.
Moms dressing like their daughters was a big trend in 2011, from suburban moms shopping in Hollister to celebrities such as Madonna and her daughter, Lourdes. Is it empowering or embarassing? Readers weighed in with comments on our story earlier this year.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, oversexified clothing for toddlers and little girls ran rampant. Like this costume from the TLC show, "Toddlers and Tiaras," sexy Halloween costumes for kids was a point of contention, as we reported this year.
LZ Granderson also reacted to kids dressing older than their years in his opinion piece, "Parents, don't dress your kids like tramps." He specifically addressed Abercrombie and Fitch's push-up bikini top, "Ashley," originally intended for girls as young as 7.
Public outcry exploded over French company Jour Après Lunes' adult-inspired lingerie marketed to young girls, as well as the hypersexualized ad campaign that accompanied it. Readers debated the effects this could have in the 1,345 comments posted on our story.
The infamous "I'm too pretty to do homework so my brother has to do it for me," T-shirt for tween girls was pulled from J.C. Penney's stores after consumers began to complain about the slogan's blatant sexism.
